math and science in english

math and science in english

yeah, it is a hot discussed topic.. but why do i feel like bringing it up? simply because of this one dude's blog article which wrote about it.
http://lipassepi.blogspot.com/2009/02/sinatraz-why-i-support-learning-math.html

JOKE OF THE DAY..
DEDICATED TO ENGINEERING STUDENTS..
Why certain things should not be translated into BM..
coz u'll fine funny instructions like this:

Connect Your Joy Stick into the server Port,
you should find little problem with the Joystick
as the server has Plug and Play mode.

Masukkan Kayu Ria anda ke dalam lubang pelayan,
anda sepatutnya tidak mempunyai banyak masaalah dalam memasukkan kayu ria
anda kerana pelayan ini mempunyai fungsi masuk dan main.

so u see.. it did sound funny when u translate the terms.
From my p.o.v,it will not make u less malay, even if you are learning in english.
Understandable the fact to "memartabatkan bahasa" and such.. but as for learning an acquiring knowledge purposes, i do not see why it is wrong.

well, try to go to the workshop nearby and say,
"pakcik, saya nak tukar palam pencucuh"

the translation will be : "uncle, i want to change my spark plug "

make any sense?

here are some of my past experiences with math and science in BM.

math..
penaakulan mantik : correct me if im wrong, i think the simple
english term for it is deduction.
i found it hard to understand the terms hujah, deduksi and aruhan back
then.
anu : unknown. huhuhuhu.. anu sounds soooooooo wrong! :P

janjang : series

science..
mostly i found the flaws in physics.. when translated in BM, these were such terms I encountered.

landasan terhempas geseran : my first thought, WTH is that!!
=the simple english term is.. friction free track.
-> it was used in the famous trolley experiment to investigate
momentum

bandul = pendulum

tangi riak = ripple tank

pembolehubah =variable?

pantulan dalam penuh =total internal reflection.

last but not least.. pita detik =ticker tape ;)

and the list continues...

in short, honestly, when i started my uni years, it was english and it took me awhile to feel really comfortable with all the english terms, when i was too used with bm. it was somehow almost like learning it all over again. after awhile, i got hang on to it ;) if it were to switch again to BM?? it will be a BIG NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :P

looking on the bright side, learning those stuffs in english will benefit students, especially in
searching for extra readings and such, which are normally in english. students can definitely learn more and benefit more :) just study! ;)
